To achieve this, you must use a plant material rich in CBD, such as special cannabis strains or hemp. Certain cannabis strains such as AC/DC and Charlotte’s Web have a high CBD concentration (up to 18% in some cases) and a low THC concentration (as little as 5%). You need a favorable CBD/THC ratio because even in cases where plants have a THC concentration of up to 6%, the extra high CBD content should hopefully render the psychoactive effects of THC inert.
Put on your gloves and eye protection, chop up the cannabis buds into small pieces and place it in the bucket. Cover the plant with the dry ice and leave it for 3 minutes. It is best only to fill the bucket halfway. This process causes the freezing of the trichome resins. Fit the 73-micron bag over the bucket and shake the ice & plant combo for about 4 minutes; this knocks the frozen trichomes off.
1 – The CO2 Cannabis Extraction Method
Turn the bucket upside down on the Plexiglas and shake as much resin through the mesh bag as possible. Scrap the hash off the Plexiglas with your scraper and place it into one of the jars. Repeat with the 160 and 220-micron mesh bags, and you’ll be rewarded with three different strains of extract.
CO2 typically behaves like a gas at standard pressure and temperature. And it is easily changed to a solid while in this state. The solid version of the gas is known as dry ice. Using the aforementioned equipment in a lab, you can turn CO2 gas into a liquid by ensuring the temperature drops below -69 degrees Fahrenheit while increasing the pressure to over 75 pounds per square inch (psi). At this stage, you have your starting point for CO2 cannabis extraction. Next, you will follow one of the three steps described below.
You can remove the chlorophyll by filtering the extract, but you significantly reduce the oil’s potency. Butane offers a stronger oil than ethanol, but it is more likely to contain solvents that could irritate the lungs.
The following is a very basic outline of how the ScCO2 process works:
Subcritical CO2 extraction produces a substance with a consistency more like molasses. The subcritical product also preserves cannabinoids other than CBD; which may or may not be desirable.
Supercritical CO2 Cannabis Oil Extraction Process
Winterization involves mixing the substance with ethanol (alcohol), then placing it in a freezer for around 24 hours; which crystallizes the fats and waxes. The deeply chilled liquid is then run through a filter, leaving the fats and waxes behind on the filter paper. The filtered ethanol mixture is then evaporated (reclaiming the ethanol in the process), leaving pure and cannabidiol-rich cannabis oil.
While pricey, supercritical extractors compare well to the cost of other solvent based approaches when taking into account the safety equipment and special facilities legally required in some countries for working with flammable solvents.
One of the advantages of using a supercritical system is that it can be used for subcritical uses as well; whereas vice-versa isn’t possible. Using a fractional extraction approach, lower temperature and lower pressure can be used to extract an oil suitable for applications such as vaping. Then by raising the temperature and pressure, the heavier compounds can then be extracted. This approach extracts the most from the same amount of trim material, with less additional processing.

The benefits of CO2 extraction are it is quick, clean, and safe. It also allows us to create CBD oil without having to process it too much afterward. CO2 supercritical extraction starts with raw hemp biomass then using carbon dioxide under high pressure and high heat we allow it to saturate the raw hemp. This allows the cannabinoids and other compounds to dissolve in the CO2. Towards the end of the process, the carbon dioxide is reclaimed, leaving behind a full spectrum crude hemp oil with no traces of CO2. We then put that crude CBD oil through a process known as winterization where the oil is mixed with warm ethanol. Once we cool this solution, it allows us to remove the unwanted compounds from the oil and to remove any lipids or wax left behind. After winterization, the next step is called ethanol recovery where the ethanol is removed from the mixture, leaving behind just the crude CBD oil.
Our Extract Lab’s Extraction Process
The raw biomass harvest is the brought to an Eagle Moon Hemp extraction facility to be processed.
Most cannabinoids and other compounds in hemp are only obtainable once heated to a proper temperature in a process known as decarboxylation. The other option is to use something such as alcohol to dissolve the desired compounds into a solution. Ethanol wash is the other process we use to obtain cannabinoid-rich oil. It begins by soaking the raw hemp biomass in ethanol, which allows the compounds to be absorbed. After these compounds are collected the ethanol is ready for the next step in the process which is ethanol recovery. If this sounds familiar it should. Ethanol recovery is the same process we use in our CO2 supercritical extraction after the second step of winterization. Once we reach the step of ethanol recovery the extraction process is the same for both methods.
Heating our material converts the CBDA present in our biomass into CBD, which means more intake by receptor in the body.
